CHAPTER EIGHT
THE FOLLOWING WEEK, Emmy had a phone call that left her shrieking and dancing round the house. She called her mother, and then Dylan.
âSorry to ring you at work,â she said, âbut I couldnât wait to tell youâthe magazine just rang. They loved my designs and theyâre going to run the feature with me in it. Apparently what swayed them was the seahorseâwhich was your suggestion, so itâs all thanks to you.â
âNo worries,â he said, sounding pleased for her. âBut it was just a suggestion. Youâre the one who did all the hard work.â
âIâm going to stand you a decent meal to say thank you.â She laughed. âDonât worry, Iâm not cooking it myself, so youâre in no danger of getting rubbery monkfish again. Mum says she can babysit Ty on Friday or Saturday, whichever suits you best.â
âEmmy, you donât need to take me out.â
âYes, I do. You more than earned it, taking over all my duties and giving me the time to work, so donât argue. Weâll sort out the time when you get home tonight, and Iâll book somewhere.â She paused. âOne last thing. They want to take a few shots of me here, at my workbench. Um, this afternoon. Do you have a problem with that?â
âNo, itâs fine. Do you need me back early to look after Tyler?â
âHopefully the photographer will be here while Tylerâs taking a nap. Or, if he wakes, it wonât matter if heâs in the shots. If thatâs OK with you, that is.â
âItâs fine,â he said again. âIâll see you later.â

The journalist arrived while Tyler was still awake, so Emmy made her a coffee and played with the baby while she answered questions, hoping that she didnât come across as too flaky or too distracted. And Tyler decided to forego his nap, so when the photographer arrivedâtwo hours later than theyâd arrangedâhe ended up being in the shots.
They were halfway through the photo shoot when Dylan arrived.
âSorryâam I in the way?â he asked, coming in to Emmyâs workroom.
âNoâweâre running late,â Emmy said.
Tyler held out his hands to Dylan, who smiled and scooped him into his arms, then kissed him roundly. âHello, trouble. Arenât you supposed to be having a nap right now?â he asked.
The baby gurgled and clapped his hands.
âCome on. Letâs give Emmy some peace and quiet.â He glanced over at Emmy, the journalist and the photographer. âIâm about to put the kettle on. Coffee?â
âThanks, thatâd be great,â Emmy said gratefully. âOh, sorry, I havenât introduced you. Dylan, this is Mike and Flo from the magazine. Flo, Mike, this is Dylan Harper.â
âNice to meet you,â Dylan said. âMilk or sugar?â
âJust milk for me,â Flo said.
âBlack, two sugars,â Mike said.
âBack in a tick,â Dylan said, winked at Emmy, and whisked Tyler out of the workroom.
âWow, heâs gorgeous and domesticated. The perfect man,â Flo said wistfully.
Just what Emmy was starting to think, though wild horses wouldnât make her admit it, especially if there was a danger of Dylan overhearing her.
